Which gives me time to hyperventilate day that in each of the previous finales, they've killed one or more of the four main characters: Impala & John in S1 (well, all of them, if you want to be technical), Sam in S2, Dean in S3. JUST SAYIN'.
I worked out that it went like this: John gave his life for Dean's by making a deal. Then Dean gave his life for Sam's by making a deal. Also, if you count Dean almost-dying in the car accident, then Dean has died twice and Sam has only died once. So I was VERY CONCERNED that it looked to be Sam's turn to do something STUPID and die. Which, well, he did do something stupid. But at least it wasn't that. And this doesn't mean he won't die all of a sudden in S5, but WE AREN'T THINKING ABOUT THAT!

I think (hope!) that it will take time for them to work it out, but it'll be like when Sam started having his visions - they're scared as shit, but they'll do it together. Dean's moral compass will bends a little, Sam will fight his demon-ness, and Chuck's publisher will ~accidentally release the Wincest saga. They will fight horribly but S5 will end with the world righted and the Winchester Bros. walking off into the sunset a la Hollywood Babylon. THERE WILL BE PUPPIES AND RAINBOWS AND PONIES, GODDAMNIT.

I DISAPPROVE OF YOUR THEORY. By which I mean, um, that was close to my theory. And I Do Not Like that we agree on its likelihood. QUICK, SOMEONE SAY IT'S A SILLY THEORY! X( I'm pretty sure they're both going to die in the end, I'm just not sure how. Because...I just don't see it ending any other way. There is no way out, they will never kill all the demons, and the only way for them to be free is for them to be dead. I also don't believe Show would end with, say, an image of them driving off down the road to fight more demons, because that would be such a cop-out. No, I'm gonna go with They Both Die. But not until AFTER they've had lots of good demon-fighty brothery times.

I didn't get into Show until last summer, actually - I'd been very active in fandom for years, then sort of faded last spring. SPN brought me back.
I agree that no ending will be complete if they're both still alive. I really want S5 to be one huge throwback to S1, just with heaven and hell instead of MOTW. But one can't/won't live without the other, so doom all around.
