If the Metallicar is the third character of Supernatural, music's the fourth. The Impala wouldn't be complete without its messy box of cassette tapes. Carry On Wayward Son is essential to every season finale. Dean's love of cock rock defines his character and his character is defined by his love of cock.

ANYWAY, I was thinking about how much I've been influenced by the show's music, both songs played in the episode and fandom interpretations. The show music got me into classic rock and has forever changed my driving playlist. Vids and fics and meta have all given me great songs or music associations, and sometimes lyrics will just make me stop and think, BOYS. Music's essential to every episode of Supernatural and it's essential to fandom as well.

quidditchkiss compiled a fantastic ranking of SPN's top 15 music moments which I mostly agree with, and that covers most of the pre-S4 onscreen music. Then there are other songs which always create a vivid image or memory of Sam&Dean or J² which might seem silly to anyone outside fandom, but make so much sense to me.

This was the first fanvid I ever fell in love with. Now, every time I hear this song, I can perfectly see Sam and Dean smiling at each other across the front seat of the Impala, and I grin like an idiot because it's so THEM - of course they belong to each other.

If 'I'm Yours' is my SPN vid, this is my J² vid. If you can watch this without smiling, you've had Botox recently, because it makes me so damn happy. It's about their friendship and how everything else can just fall away except for each other. Every time I hear it, I think of the way they tease each other and how comfortable they are together.

Not sure where this started, but Matt Nathanson has become my perfect music for every J²-as-boys AU ever. Don't ask, just roll with it. This was definitely cemented by _mournthewicked's reinventing love 'verse - more specifically, her Big Bang, tell them we're like magnets. While I want to rec the shit out of this entire 'verse because I love it to death and you should too, now his songs also make me think of her Jared & Jensen having messy, loving dorm room sex. I am FULLY OKAY with that.

Oh, I love this! It seems strange, but "You can do better than me" by Death Cab for Cutie always makes me think of how Dean feels about Sam, especially s1 and s2. I think "Bring it on Home" by Big Little Town is my J2 song, I ccan just imagine them waiting for each other after a long day and crashing on the coach together ♥

YES! 'Bad Moon Rising' came on while I was driving down an empty highway at night, and I just about flipped the car trying to hit 'next'.

But I still love how all of Show's music is so evocative.
